This painting is of my husband Ken Downing, at one of his favourite places
along the Old Man River, very near to where the original historic N.W.M.P. Fort was originally built at Fort MacLeod, Alberta.
This is where Ken and many of his friends grew up, riding their trusty horses along and crossing the famed Old Man,
and exploring the island that once was the outpost of Colonel MacLeod. A couple of years ago, Ken and I were at this very location,
with two of his most favourite Quarter Horses, Cap and Trapper. It was wonderful to ride along the river, and hear some stories
that were nearly as long as the Old Man. On this particular day the clouds were rolling, the air feeling sticky and heavy, and
there was that possibility of a thunderstorm looming in the not too distant future.
In the stories of the day, it was a time for him to let his mind wander when he was young and how their imaginations
ran along with the Old Man... and was that really the Colonel standing on the other side of the river? Amazingly on this day,
when the wind generally blows... there wasn't any wind to blow those thoughts away! |
