My love and respect for the RCMP Musical Ride dates back to 1959, the first time I ever saw their performance in Brandon, MB. It continues to this day. The most memorable occurred on July 4th, 1999, the year that marked 125 years of RCMP history. It was an emotionally charged event;
in the distance the red serges and flags barely visible through the cloud of dust from the hooves
of the horses as they made their way across the plains only to enter the famed Midnight Stadium in Fort Macleod, AB where all this history began so long ago. What made this occasion more unique
was that I had the opportunity to meet and spend time with my favourite horse in the ride,
“Hector” and his partner, after their performance.
Hector is the main subject in the painting and will not soon be forgotten in my memory.
